Hyperemesis gravidarum: it sucks.

A big announcement came from the Royal family yesterday: the Duke and the Duchess of Cambridge are expecting baby #2! Kate is about 2 months along, and the parents couldn’t be happier!

Usually this sort of news would not be made public before the three month preggo mark, but for the second time Kate is suffering from Hyperemesis Gravidarum. Whether you are a Royal or not, Hyperemesis gravidarum {or HG for short} is a painstaking ordeal to go through.

Hyperemesis gravidarum (HG) is a complication of pregnancy characterized by intractable nausea, vomiting, and dehydration and is estimated to affect 0.5–2.0% of pregnant women. Malnutrition and other serious complications, such as fluid or electrolyte imbalances, may result.

Hyperemesis is considered a rare complication of pregnancy, but because nausea and vomiting during pregnancy exist on a spectrum, it is often difficult to distinguish this condition from the more common form of nausea and vomiting experienced during pregnancy known as morning sickness.

Hyperemesis gravidarum almost killed me. Although it is extremely uncomfortable and very unpleasant, HG isn’t typically dangerous. But my case was a totally different story. 55lbs lost in less than two months, inability to tend to daily activities such as walking and even drinking, and feeling like i was dying. every single day. even the sight of water made me vomit! because i was young with no health insurance at the time, i was also stupid. HG ended up killing my unborn baby before i could make it to my second trimester. to this day it was the absolute worst thing i have ever been through and i would not wish it on anyone.

Duchess Kate has pushed Hyperemesis gravidarum into the public eye which has made awareness increase tremendously, and i applaud her bravery. For more information about Hyperemesis gravidarum, visit http://www.helpher.org/ and show your support!

my sister in law lost about 25 pounds in her first two months. I finally just made her go to the doctor (her mom and MIL were worried but saying it was just morning sickness, some people have it worse than others)She spent a few days in the hospital replenishing her fluids and then had a plan of health care action going forward. It truly was miserable for her.

HG is miserable! I had it with my first pregnancy and lost 25 pounds in two weeks! The morning sickness didn’t start for me until about 9 1/2 weeks. But it lasted until I delivered. I remember being so dehydrated that my urine was brown. The hospital was shocked by the color. Thank god for zofran! It truely helped me get through it! I’m 11 weeks into my second pregnancy and so far only light morning sickness! I actually feel normal!

I had hg so badly that I too lost my son. It caused an incompetent cervix and I went into preterm labor at 22 weeks. The cord became compressed since he was so small and so he suffocated. An hour of pushing after 5 hours of labor and he was stillborn. I lost 60lbs while pregnant. Here’s my story

  27. I had morning sickness for all three of my pregnancy for the nine months, thankfully it was never life threatening, just very, very uncomfortable. It is nothing to joke about though.

I had HG so bad that I was on a feeding tube then a PICC line for TPN and lipids which then got infected and i went septic. I had to tie my tubes after my daughter was born during the c-section since the dr said he couldn’t guarantee i would survive another pregnancy as i have been pregnant 3 times and have 2 kids. HG is no joke.

I wish there was more to be done to help with HG as it’s a struggle to survive let alone do ‘normal’ things.

Oh, Jess. I am SO sorry for the pain and suffering you went through. I can’t imagine losing a child.

I, too, suffered with each pregnancy with HG. Losing over 50lbs with each one. Yes, even water made me sick. Very difficult to manage. Crippling is an understatement.

I tried taking medication, but it actually made me severely depressed. So I had to stop it.

I wish events had a different outcome for you. You will be in my prayers as you deal with your loss.

Luckily, I never had one day of morning sickness. If I went through that, not to mention labor and deliver I would have stopped at one.

  61. Adam says:

I like your post Jessica. The problem is many women, their partners, family and friends are often confused about what constitutes a severe experience of nausea and vomiting in pregnancy and when it becomes hyperemesis. Diagnosis is variable, with some physicians diagnosing hyperemesis when a hospital admission is required to treat dehydration. Others acknowledge that it is difficult to differentiate between severe vomiting and hyperemesis and that severe vomiting may lead to hyperemesis. Women who have been expecting nausea and vomiting during their pregnancy may be suffering in silence, not knowing whether ‘’this is normal’’. In many cases, a pregnant woman is not in contact with a specialist or midwife until the second trimester begins. This means that symptoms of nausea and vomiting occur without access to sound advice and leave women wondering what is normal.
